The White Wizard Snail (Filopaludina martensi) is a large, peaceful freshwater snail from Southeast Asia, known for its striking white shell and role as a detritivore. These snails are viviparous, giving birth to live, fully-formed young, and have a slow reproductive rate, making them safe for planted tanks. They are plant-safe, primarily eat detritus and bacterial growth, and also engage in filter-feeding, but thrive in warm, well-oxygenated water (73-79°F / 23-26°C) with a pH of 7.0-8.5.
Key Characteristics & Behavior
-
Appearance:Large snails (up to 2 inches) with brilliant white shells.
-
Temperament:Peaceful and non-aggressive, making them suitable for aquascapes and communities with other peaceful tank mates.
-
Feeding Habits:Detritivores that mainly consume decaying organic matter, bacterial films, and excess food. They can also supplement their diet through filter-feeding by trapping particles with their gills.
-
Reproduction:Viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young. They have a slow reproductive rate, which prevents them from overwhelming an aquarium.
