Racer stripe nerite care guide
Tank size A minimum of 3 to 5 gallons is recommended for a single snail. They can be added to larger community tanks, as well.
Water parameters Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C).
pH: 7.0–8.5. They prefer slightly alkaline and moderately hard water, which provides the calcium needed for their shell health.
Water quality: They are sensitive to poor water conditions and toxic copper, so regular water changes and monitoring are essential.
Substrate Use a soft, smooth substrate, like sand or fine gravel, to protect their delicate bodies.
Diet Racer Striped Nerite Snails are voracious algae eaters, consuming soft green algae, diatoms, and biofilm from surfaces. If algae is insufficient, supplement their diet with algae wafers, blanched vegetables (like zucchini and spinach), or calcium-rich foods.
Tankmates These snails are peaceful and can coexist with other non-aggressive invertebrates and fish. Good companions include tetras, rasboras, Corydoras catfish, and dwarf shrimp. Avoid aggressive tankmates that might harm or stress them.
Lifespan While online sources vary, with average lifespans cited as 1–3 years, anecdotal reports from aquarists suggest they can live much longer, with some reaching up to 5 years or more under ideal conditions.
Breeding Racer Striped Nerites do not breed in freshwater, eliminating the risk of overpopulation in a home aquarium. Females may still lay tiny white egg capsules on tank surfaces, but these will not hatch.
