Trichromis salvini
(formerly Cichlasoma salvini), commonly known as the Salvin's Cichlid or Yellow Belly Cichlid, is a vibrant Central American species. The "Rio Tabasco" (often grouped with or referred to as the Rio Grijalva) variant is particularly sought after by aquarists for its exceptionally intense red and yellow coloration.

Key Characteristics of the Rio Tabasco Strain
  • Vibrant Coloration: This specific geographical variant is known for its insane red coloration, especially on the belly and lower half of the body. While the general species has yellow bodies with blue spangling, the Tabasco/Grijalva fish are typically more saturated.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Females are often more colorful than males, featuring a prominent black blotch on the dorsal fin and a brighter red belly, especially when spawning.
  • Temperament: Known as a "pocket battleship," they are highly aggressive and territorial for their size (reaching roughly 15–18 cm).

Aquarium Care Requirements
  • Tank Size: Minimum of 150 litres (40 US gal) for a single specimen or pair; larger tanks (125+ gallons) are better for managing aggression in community settings.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 22–27 °C (72–81 °F).
    • pH: Prefers alkaline water, typically 7.0 – 8.0.
    • Hardness: 7 – 25°N (moderately hard).
  • Decor: Requires plenty of hiding spots like rocks, logs, and caves to establish territories and break lines of sight.
  • Diet: Primarily carnivorous; they accept high-quality pellets, frozen foods, and small invertebrates.
