Schistura megalodon
is a species of small river loach within the family Nemacheilidae. Despite its name, this diminutive fish typically reaches a standard length (SL) of only about 40–42 mm.
Key Characteristics
- Unique Mouth Structure: The species name megalodon (meaning "big tooth" in ancient Greek) refers to its unusually large processus dentiformes—a tooth-like projection in the upper jaw.
- Coloration: Its body features 10–12 dark brown bars on a light brown to purple ground. In life, it may display red or yellow hues on its fins.
- Habitat: It is a rheophilic (flow-loving) fish, inhabiting clear, fast-running montane streams over rocky or sandy bottoms.
Discovery and Range
- Origin: It was first described in 2014 by Marco Endruweit.
- Distribution: Currently, it is known only from the Irrawaddy River basin in Yingjiang County, Yunnan Province, China, specifically near the border with Myanmar.
- Status: It is considered rare and was likely overlooked for years due to its small size and remote, politically sensitive habitat.
