The Kipli, or Julidochromis marksmithii, is a small, cave-dwelling cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika. Identified in 2014, reaching a about 7–15 centimetres or 2.8–5.9 inches this fish displays a striking yellow body adorned with two to three horizontal black stripes and blue fin highlights. This species thrives in rocky environments, providing an ideal choice for aquarists seeking a visually appealing and resilient fish.

 

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 100 liters (approx. 25-30 gallons) is recommended for a single pair.
  • Water Parameters: Hard, alkaline water is essential, with a pH of 8.0-9.0 and temperatures between 23-25°C (73-77°F).
  • Diet: They are omnivorous, feeding on invertebrates found in algae (Aufwuchs). In aquariums, they accept flakes, pellets, and frozen foods.
