Description

  • Shape & Fins: They have a classic triangular angelfish shape with long, elegant, flowing dorsal and anal fins that contribute to their overall height.

  • Size: angelfish can grow up to 6 inches in body height and over a foot tall with their fins, requiring a spacious tank.

Care Requirements

  • Aquarium Size: A minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended for adult angelfish, with taller tanks being preferable to accommodate their fin length and vertical swimming style.

  • Water Conditions:
    • Temperature: Maintain a stable tropical temperature between 75–84°F (24–30°C).
    • pH: The ideal pH level is slightly acidic, ranging from 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Water Hardness: These fish prefer soft water with a general hardness between 3 and 8.

  • Tank Setup:
    • Decor: A well-planted tank with large-leaf plants, driftwood arranged vertically, and floating plants for cover is ideal.
    • Filtration: Use a low-flow filter to mimic their natural environment and ensure gentle water movement.

  • Diet: Feed a varied diet of high-quality flakes, frozen krill, and bloodworms.

  • Tank Mates: Paraiba angelfish can be kept with other peaceful community fish like Corydoras, Mollies, Pleco's and Danios, but they may become territorial, especially when breeding.

Behavior & Temperament

  • Temperament: While generally peaceful, angelfish can exhibit territorial behavior, particularly when they form pairs or in cramped tanks.

  • Breeding: Pairs will bond and lay eggs on vertical surfaces like glass, slate, or plants.

  • Territoriality: They can become protective of their young and may chase away other angelfish from their chosen territory.
