Pterophyllum scalare is one of the most popular tropical aquarium fish and has been kept by hobbyists for nearly 100 years. As such, there are many available morphs from solid white to solid black and everything in between. Angelfish make good community fish with mid to large sized tankmates, alhough their large adult size means especially small species such as cardinal tetras are generally best avoided.

- Minimum tank size: 40 gallons for a pair, but a larger tank is required for a group. The tall body shape of this fish must be considered regarding the height of its tank.

- Social behavior: Shoaling. Generally peaceful, but can be territorial during spawning.
