Apistogramma cacatuoides "Rio Itaya" is a captive-bred dwarf cichlid prized for its vibrant orange-red coloration and peaceful temperament. Males display elaborate fins and bold color; females shift to bright yellow with black markings during breeding.
This species thrives in pairs within a 20-gallon tank with soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–8.0, 70–82°F). A sandy substrate is essential—they are earth-eaters and require caves, flower pots, or leaf litter for shelter and spawning sites.
Breeding is straightforward with live baby brine shrimp and proper setup; parents guard fry for several weeks. Dither fish like small tetras or livebearers reduce aggression by providing chase targets. An excellent choice for planted or biotope aquariums.
