Thriving in 25+ gallon tanks at 72–78°F with neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.5–8), this omnivore requires a herbivore-heavy diet supplemented with quality sinking pellets and vegetables. Its 10–12 year lifespan makes it a long-term aquarium companion. Cave-spawning behavior indicates preference for driftwood and hiding spots. Excellent community fish, it coexists well with neon tetras, ember tetras, and gouramis, making it ideal for planted or established freshwater setups seeking natural bioload management.
