Rope fish are distinctive, elongated freshwater inhabitants native to Nigeria, prized by aquarists for their unique eel-like appearance and nocturnal behavior. These bottom-dwelling fish thrive in well-established tanks with plenty of hiding spots among plants, driftwood, and caves. They're relatively peaceful but may consume smaller fish or invertebrates, making them best suited for species-specific or large community setups.
Erpetoichtyhys calabaricus prefer soft, slightly acidic water with moderate flow and stable temperatures between 72–82°F. Feed high-quality sinking pellets, frozen foods, and occasional live options. Nocturnal by nature, they're most active during evening and nighttime hours. Tank mates should be large, similarly peaceful species that won't compete aggressively for food or space.
