The California sea hare are docile marine herbivore prized for algae control in established saltwater systems. This species grazes continuously on nuisance algae, including hair algae and film algae, making it an effective biological solution for reef tanks. Sea hares are peaceful and compatible with most corals and fish, though they may occasionally consume desirable macroalgae. They require stable water conditions: pH 8.1–8.3, temperature 72–78°F, and salinity 1.023–1.025. Provide ample rockwork and algae growth to sustain feeding. Handle with care, as they release ink when stressed. Best suited for established tanks with mature algae populations and strong water quality management.
