How to Set Up a Freshwater Planted Tank

A thriving planted aquarium is one of the most rewarding things in the hobby — a living, breathing aquascape that improves water quality and creates a stunning focal point. Here’s how to do it right from the start.

Step 1: Choose Your Tank

Any size works, but larger tanks are more forgiving. A 20–40 gallon tank is ideal for beginners. Ensure it gets adequate light — avoid direct sunlight, which causes algae explosions.

Step 2: Substrate

Plants need nutrients at their roots. Options include:

  • Aquasoil (ADA, Fluval Stratum) — nutrient-rich, slightly lowers pH; ideal for most plants
  • Capped sand/gravel — layer of nutrient substrate capped with sand for aesthetics
  • Inert substrate + root tabs — budget-friendly; add fertilizer tabs at roots

Step 3: Hardscape

Add rocks and driftwood before water and plants. Popular choices:

  • Seiryu stone or dragon stone for a dramatic iwagumi look
  • Spider wood or manzanita for a natural forest feel
  • Ohko stone for a lightweight, textured option

We carry a range of aquascaping rocks and wood in our Aquarium Supplies collection.

Step 4: Plant Selection

Start with easy, forgiving plants:

  • Foreground: dwarf hairgrass, Monte Carlo, dwarf sagittaria
  • Midground: crypts, java fern, anubias
  • Background: vallisneria, Amazon sword, hornwort

Step 5: Lighting & CO2

Match your light to your plant demands. For high-tech tanks, pressurized CO2 injection dramatically accelerates growth and prevents algae. For low-tech tanks, liquid carbon supplements and low-light plants work well.

Step 6: Cycle Before Adding Fish

Run the tank through the nitrogen cycle (4–6 weeks) before adding livestock. See our Aquarium Cycling Guide for details.

Step 7: Fertilization

Plants need macro and micro nutrients. Dose a quality all-in-one liquid fertilizer weekly. We carry fertilizers from Aquaforest, AquaVitro, and Brightwell Aquatics in our Aquarium Supplies.
