Beginner Coral Stocking Order — What to Add First

One of the most common mistakes new reef keepers make is adding corals too soon, too fast, or in the wrong order. Here’s a practical guide to building a coral reef tank the right way — starting with the most forgiving and working toward the most demanding.

Is Your Tank Ready for Coral?

Before adding any coral, confirm:

• Tank has been running for at least 3–6 months
• Ammonia and nitrite are 0 ppm
• Parameters are stable (not just hitting targets once)
• Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH, Calcium: 400–450 ppm, Mag: 1250–1350 ppm
• Salinity: 1.025–1.026 sg, Temperature: 25–27°C
• Lighting is appropriate for the corals you intend to keep

Stage 1 — Soft Corals (Months 1–3 of Coral Keeping)

Soft corals require the least stable parameters and are the most forgiving:

• Mushroom corals (Discosoma, Rhodactis) — incredibly hardy; thrive in lower light and nutrients
• Leather corals (Toadstool, Finger Leather) — fast growers; tolerate parameter fluctuations
• Zoanthids / Palythoa — colourful, easy to frag, wide parameter tolerance
• Green Star Polyps (GSP) — fast-growing mat coral; great for beginners but keep contained

Stage 2 — Easy LPS Corals (Months 3–6)

LPS corals need more stable alkalinity but reward you with dramatic polyp extension:

• Frogspawn Coral — similar care to hammer; stunning bubble clusters
• Duncan Coral — fast-growing, feeds eagerly, very forgiving
• Bubble Coral — low flow, low light; unique appearance

Stage 3 — Anemones (After 6+ Months)

Stage 4 — SPS Corals (Advanced — 12+ Months)

Small Polyp Stony (SPS) corals like Acropora and Montipora demand near-perfect, ultra-stable parameters and high light. They are not beginner corals.

• Montipora — the most forgiving SPS; a good “SPS starter”
• Acropora — demanding; requires pristine water, high flow, and high light

Acclimation Tips

• Always dip new corals in coral dip before adding to the display
• Start in a lower-light area and move up gradually over 2–4 weeks
• Never add more than 2–3 new corals at once
• Monitor parameters closely for the first few weeks
